How About 100 Plus Degrees

The day started out just after Sun-up. Drove from Ed's to the same point I stopped walking yesterday...about 5 miles short of Marcing. Knew today was going to be a scorcher, so left SAM in the trailer. By the time I arrived in Marcing, I had drunk all my water.

Marcing was the first of four watering holes I used for the day. It became incredibly hot walking on the macadam. The heat penetrated thru my walking shoes. The road, Idaho 78, was a first class road with plenty of berm to walk. Traffic was minimal all day.

It is 29 miles from Marcing to Murphy, a distance I was certain I would have no problem reaching. Was I ever wrong. I quit after 22 miles.

Before reaching Givens Hot Springs, roadside park along the Snake River, I stopped a second time when two Sisters offered ice water for my water bottles. At the Hot Springs, I ran cold water into my Australian Outback Hat and 3 times dumped the whole thing over my head, soaking thoroughly all my clothes. Ten minutes later, I was completely dry. I repeated the water-in-hat trick many more times wherever a handy irrigation ditch came close to the road.

I walked 6 hours non stop. Twice more I asked for and received refills of ice water. I was beginning to be uncomfortable. I wore shorts. I put sunscreen on when I started my walk, but after 5 hours in the blistering Sun, my legs below my knees began to throb. At least 10 times, my right foot crumpled...I nearly fell to the pavement. I believe that even though I was drinking lots of water, dehydration was setting in.

At six & half hours, I could go no more. My legs refused to move and I was becoming disoriented. I walked up to a modern brick home...way out in the sticks...but no one was home.
I lay down in the front yard grass under a humongeous shade tree and promptly fell asleep.

A few miutes later I phoned Ed, who was driving my Van to pick me up in Murphy. Told him where I was and again fell asleep. 45 minutes later, Ed and his wife, Betty, arrived in separate cars. Ed took one look at me and said...you are coming back home with us...

Rode back with Betty while Ed drove my Van. In the last 72 hours, I have walked 115 miles under intense heat. Learned from this...I MUST have adequate water...soon, the Ranches will be spread out with limited opportunity to refill. That is when the Van will become really valuable...to carry extra water and provide shelter when the Sun becomes unbearable around noon.

I took a long cool shower and slept another half hour or so. Enjoyed another Ranch dinner, after which Ed & Son, Lee, took off to bring in the baled hay. It was too hot to do it earlier.

Ed advised me to take tomorrow off...to do NO walking. I agreed. So, I will probably drive to Nyssa, where there is a gem and Thuder Egg festival going on. They have guided tours into the hills to find thuder eggs and a BBQ at 5 pm. Sounds to be fun, so hope I get to attend.

Idaho

ADRIAN, ORGEON

HOMEDALE, IDAHO RAY BROWN & BRUCE MAYNARD

As the Sun rose, I walked this morning from Ed's Ranch in Adrian, Oregon the 16 miles to Homedale, Idaho. Did not take SAM as Ed wanted to drive out to pick me up and drive me back to his Ranch.

At 11:30 am, walked by the Senior Center in Holmdale and decided to check it out. WOW...lunch was being served and I was invited for $3.00. Was first asked to prove was over 60...liked them immediately. Was introduced and chatted a few minutes about SAM & ME..to applause. Before lunch was completed, the local Newspaper Reporter came in. I spent the next hour being interviewed. Finally got back on the walk at 1:30 pm.

Walked an additional 6 miles towards the town of Marsing when Ed and his wife Betty showed up. We all drove back to his place and twisted my arm to stay another night...of course I will.

Ed suggested that in the morning, I drive Van & SAM to where he picked me up. There, to park the car and with or without SAM, walk as far as I can towards the town of Murphy, some 35 miles from Marsing. I gave him my spare key. Later tomorrow afternoon, he and Betty will drive to my car and drive it towards Murphy until they find me/us. They will then return home and SAM & ME will again be on our own.,

Seemed to be a plan, so I agreed.

No accidents today. Walk was very relaxed and tranquil. temperature reached into the high 90's. With this kind of help, I believe I can walk 50 or miles a day. We shall see.

July 07

Today is July 07. Up at 5am, I am walking again sans SAM back to Vale. I reach the top of Keenen Pass, where one still sees the wagon wheel ruts from the Oregon Trail Wagon Trains which brought some 350,000 folks to Oregon Territory between 1830 and 1889.

Vale was a major Oregon Trail stopover along the banks of the Malheur River. Many of Vale's buildings are colorfully painted with giant murals of Pioneer folks

Keenen Pass is 8 miles from Cow Hollow. I see 5 dead snakes run over...not a single rattler.
I walk back to Cow Hollow. Take out an hour to devour one of Dick & Darlene's home-made Tacos, washed down with a Coors Light.

Coming down off Keenen Pass, I encounter an SUV with a two guys and a woman with her left arm in a sling and a VERY Big Shiner. Road was a mess with skid marks and oil for a hundred feet or so. Looks like someone had an accident here...Yes, ME, says the 40-something good looking woman. Cece, my daughter and I were on our way to the lake with two jet ski's on the trailer...I looked down for the window lever...Cece wanted her window opened & ran off the road into the gravel (gravel was thrown all over the road),,,I get it back on the pavement, but the trailer played crack the whip with my pickup...truck flew through the air, rolling at least three times.

One Jet Ski was split in half. My shoulder was separated, but Cece was not hurt.

Yeah, says the older of the two guys, but my dog got killed...Well, not right away, she adds....

I expressed my sorrow and hurridly walked away.

After the taco, I took SAM out of the trailer and SAM & ME walked the 10 miles to Adrian and back to Cow Hollow...a total of 36 miles for the day.

As we walked back to Cow Hollow, one Ed Price stopped, rolled down his window and says...you Bruce...a statment not a question. Yes, that be me & SAM here. Well, been talking to folks about you and would sure like you to come to our Ranch for the night...Just before Adrian, the big green house with the sign Angus By Price. Thanked Ed & we will look you up a bit later.

Walking with SAM a bit further on towards Cow Hollow, who comes down the road but Jay Brown, also heading for Adrian. We two cart pushers...he from Eugene...me from Bellingham, each following separate uncoordinated paths, meet in the beautiful irrigated valley bordering the Snake River. I flag down the first car to come upon us. A very pretty young girl looks a bit stunned to be stopped (I stood in her way to make sure she stopped). I explain about Jay and I and our carts and our walks...Jay to Philadelphia...me to Key West...and would you please take our pictures. Kinda like recording a possible historic moment adds Jay. Kiah, pretty name that fit her well, agreed and snapped merrily away on both my and Jay's cameras.

Jay and I then went our own ways, Jay saying I gotta feeling we're gonna meet up again.

We did, when Jay walked his cart into Adrian, I was driving into the Ranch of Ed Price. Told Ed about Jay, who said, we have a bunk house with two bedrooms and you bet he can come too. I drove back into Adrian where Jay was sitting on the loading dock of the granary, munching nuts in the shade...it was over 90 degrees.

NO, Jay says...I want to walk into Idaho today. Thank Ed for me, but no thanks.

Jay missed BBQ Angus Rib Steaks done to perfection by Lee, Ed's 15 year old Son. On the veranda, Ed and I sat in comfy spring sprung chairs drinking beer while Lee cooked up the stseaks.

Ed suggested that I walk tomorrow as far as I can. He will come find me somewhere in Idaho at precisely 3 pm and drive me back to his Ranch - for another beer, etc - and then I can drive in the evening to my next leg. Oh, yes, Ed has 100 acres of prime farm land, which is up for sale...he wants to do something new, he says...In Rawlins, Wyoming, where SAM & ME will walk in a few weeks, Ed has a second home & would like to meet up with us there for some more participation in this walk of SAM & ME...which, he says has become his...did he say HERO?

Blow me over...wonder where I will catch up with Jay

July 07. 2010

OK, it is tomorrow evening in Adrian, Oregon, a couple miles from Idaho.

July 05, I drove with SAM & a new "small" trailer to Brian's. Met Danielle, a 4th generation stgay at home mom, who chatted the evening away on one of Brian's bar stools...I on another. Danielle informs me that nearly everyone from Bend to Vale, Oregon are somehow related...as SAM & ME walked East the 260 miles, our progress was passed ahead of us.

30 minutes before Sunrise, I started walking sans SAM from Brians. I arrived in Vale 24 miles later at 11:30am and within 10 minutes thummed a ride back to Brians. Walter, a 5th generation rancher, said the valleys were quite pure...i.e.; blood lines, and outsiders were welcome but not encouraged to stay. He raises cattle and onion seed...the seed he sells all ovewr the world. Vale advertises itself as the Onion Capitol of the World.

I packed up the Van, said goodbyes to Brian and his clients...who I also knew by now, and drove back to Vale. On the way, I stopped to chat with another "walker" pushing a cart towards Vale. Jay Brown is a 57 year old reetired History Professor from Eugene, pursueing his long time dream to walk the USA promoting the Constitution and our Bill of Rights.

As Jay was styill walking to Vale, I was explaining to the Sheriff, details of the accident which nearly involved me while stopped at a crosswalk. A 10 year old riding his bike quite fast on the sidewalk towards my crosswalk, without looking, sped into the crosswalk and was broadsided by a SUV. The young man was sent flying ten feet or so right toward my driverside door. He hit the ground before hitting me.

I jumped out, told him not to move and what is your name...Rick...OK, what is your name...Rick...Ok Rick, don't move...you feel hurt...No...

A young - 17 or so - girl driving the SUV, kneels next to Rick....Oh F___, Oh, F___...my Mom gonna F---ing gonna kill me...Yes, I add...she probably will...Is he hurt...No, I'm not hurt, says Rick...a crowd has now gathered. One calls 911...what is your home phone number...lady dials and says ...you better get down to _______...your Son has been in an accident...you better come quick.

Sirens...ambulance pulls up...Rick gets up...Sheriff screeches to a stop, jumps out...shoos the crowd back...you see what happened (to me)...Yes...I tell him...And no helmet...riding on the sidewallk...going too fast...not looking...I got the impression the Sheriff knew Rick. According to Danielle, they are probably related somehow.

There is no blood. Rick looks ok...not skinned up...no crookie legs or arms...nose not scraped off on the pavement. Sheriff says I can go.

So, I drive 5 miles out of Vale toward Adrian, park the Van and walk back to Vale and return to the Van...a total of 10 more miles making it 34 for the day. Then I drive on to a tiny crossroads called Cow Hollow. Cow Hollow has one building, Sunset Restaurant & machine shop. Dick & Darlene serve up home prepared meals, divvy out gas & build or repair your "steel" needs.

Three blocks up Cow Hollow Road is Cow Hollow Park. Dick says...go park at Cow Hollow Park for the night...it has everything...showers, good water, baseball, tennis, badmitten, parking for 30 Mobil Homes, complete with electricity , picnic tables and big shady trees...cost is FREE.

SAM & ME spend the night.

So ends Day 1 back on the road. Tomorrow (today as I write) promises to be equally eventfull.

Virgin Territory

Since my first drive across America in 1952, I have lost count. Most certainly, I have driven across in all directions, using nearly every major and many secondary roads. One road I have NOT driven is Hells Canyon...been by it many times, but when SAM & ME enter Hells Canyon a few days from now, it will be Virgin Territory.

Often wondered what "virgin" would be like...now we will know.

SAM & ME are returning to Brian's tomorrow. Tuesday at or before daybreak, we will walk the 22 miles to Vale, Oregon. In the afternoon/evening, we will set out for Adrian on our way into the Snake River Canyon Country...Virgin Territory.

Leaving Bellingham this time is bittersweet. I won't go into details...suffice to say that our return has not been pleasant. I look forward to joining once again the real World we live in.

We return to our walk with diligence, desire, dedication. and determination...

SAM & ME will walk like none before us...trust you will enjoy...

Walking "Plan"

Someone just commented, asking...didn't you have your walk all planned out before you began...why all this backtracking...

Regretably, when I "published" the comment, Google could not do so. I will respond here.

Originally, our "Plan" was that SAM & ME would load up SAM with supplies and away we would go, walking together, but without support. This Plan worked just fine for the first few days of our walk. We camped a few days. We were invited into homes for a few nights. We could buy supplies at just about every corner store. Our Plan looked to be working just fine.

As SAM & ME walked further away from Bellingham, we became aware of several new considerations;

Travelling close to home, we were within reach of family and friends who helped us with logistics and supplies (thank you all).

Moving thru urban areas, "camping" restrictions began to limit places SAM & ME could set up camp. At a walking pace of 4 miles an hour, in unfamiliar territory, it was becoming more difficult to find a place to stop for the night. We opted to take hotels a few times and quickly realized that the high cost was simply not possible on our limited budget.

Having a few weeks experience under our belt, we recognized that we would soon enter into areas where supplies would not be readily available. Also, our Company back in Bellingham, was still in need of regular (every couple weeks or so) admin attention, requiring my returning to Bellingham to do that chore. This required transportation. We checked out Air, Bus & Train availabilities and realized that the USA does not have a very satisfactory system. All options required finding our own way from our walk stopping points to a transportation center.

SAM needed regular maintenance attention to electrical components which kept failing...see prior blogs. Replacement parts took many days to obtain, delaying our walk.

We had to find a way to support ourselves.

We decided to bring our Van into our walk Plan. Van provided transportation back to Bellingham. Van provided means for shelter. Van provided means for supplies, such as food, water and clothing. But how to get SAM & ME walking while taking along the Van. We tried inviting folks to come join us, hoping for a partner to drive the Van and enjoy our walk. No one responded.

Using the Van as Home Base, SAM & ME would walk out 20 miles or so. SAM would be left "parked" (and unprotected from whatever) while I hitch hiked back to the Van. Not acceptable.

Enter the Motorcycle. Need a trailer to transport Motorcycle. Things are now becoming very complicated. Motorcycle provided transportation to and from SAM...and even an alternate means to return to Bellingham... The COST in $$ and time/effort to move the Van and Motorcycle quickly became unrealistic and we simply were running out of $$.

Even with all these logistic problems, SAM & ME, together with Van, Trailer & Motorcycle, were piling on the miles. We found we could walk with some ease for very long distances. SAM was performing as designed. I was avoiding injury and very much enjoying our walk.

We simply ran out of $$ and I became quite run down from moving vehicles. For every 25 miles SAM & ME walk, we must drive vehicles 100 miles in support. This became unacceptable.

We again tried to find someone to join us. No response (Peter ...remember his Apple/Salad lunch...did volunteer to come along starting in August...thankyou, Peter).

So, back to the drawing - Planning - board.

We had to come up with a way to support SAM & ME walking, support our Company in Bellingham. I seriously considered closing my Company of 30 years. It isn't really contributing any $$ to our effort and was taking lots of time/care. Simply stated, I thoroughly enjoy my clients, most of whom I know personally, and it isn't easy to throw away 30 years of effort...even for SAM & ME to walk to Key West.

So, Nephew Dale, steps up. His help will limit my need to return to Bellingham to once a month or so.

We still, however, must support SAM & ME as we enter into really empty miles between fewer and fewer towns to obtain supplies. And with Summer nearly over and Fall not far off, those 7,000 & 8,000 foot Rocky Mountain Passes we must still cross will soon have snow.

So, we gotta get a move on.

Current decision: Motorcycle is eliminated. Large trailer is replaced by a mini-enclosed trailer which will afford SAM protection and security. Van will pull SAMs mini-trailer quite easily and provide Home Base for our walk support. With no one to help drive the Van, we have decided to park the Van / Trailer...SAM & ME will walk every morning beginning at daylight for 10 miles out from the Van and return. Van will drive forward (East) 20 miles & park again during mid-day. That same evening SAM & ME will take another 10-mile walk out & return to the Van.

Van moves again 20 miles forward (East). And we repeat the process.

I.E.,; we move ONLY forward (East). SAM & ME will walk 30 - 40 miles every day with a rest period during mid-day between walks.

If someone wishes to join us to drive the Van, we can alter our plan to eliminate the "Return to Van" portion. This would allow two 20-mile walks a day...all going forward (East), which is the most efficient manner to perform this walk.

Up side: SAM & ME have proved we can do the walk just fine.

Down side: Logistics is getting in the way.

SAM & ME would welcome comments / suggestions / offers.

In the interim, SAM & ME return to Brian's on Monday, July 05. We will start walking at daylight July 06 and keep moving toward Key West.

We will complete this walk.
