BRUCE AT PEGGY'S ALPACA RANCH

ALPACAS WANT TO BE IN THE ACTION

ALPACAS ARE STATELY

ALPACAS HAVE SOFT LIPS AND THEY LOVE TO NIBBLE...BUT HAVE ONLY LOWER FRONT TEETH AND RARELY NIP. ALPACAS MAKE EXCELLENT PETS AND ARE VERY INTELLIGENT.

ALPACAS ARE VERY SOCIAL ANIMALS...WHEN PISSED OFF, THEY CAN AND DO "SPIT" QUITE LONG DISTANCES...USUALLY AT ANOTHER ALPACA...BUT NOT ALWAYS

PEGGY'S ALPACA RANCH - FROM THE FIELDS...SORRY I HAVE NO PIC FROM THE HOUSE...IS REALLY MAJESTIC.

ALPACA GESTATION IS 11 MONTHS...BEST TIME TO BREED IS WITHIN 27 DAYS AFTER DELIVERY...NON-PREGNANT GIRLS HANG CLOSE TO PREGNANT GIRLS...AS PEGGY SAYS...SAYING "ME NEXT" "ME NEXT "ME NEXT"...SEEMS THEY LIKE BEING PREGNANT. UPON BEING BORN, THE NEWBORN IS UP ON ITS FEET WITHIN MINUTES AND ROMPING AROUND A FEW MINUTES LATER.

BOYS AND GIRLS ARE KEPT SEPARATE. ALPACAS CAN HAVE NO MENSTRAL CYCLE AND CAN BECOME PREGNANT AT ANY TIME.

A PRIMARY GOAL OF PEGGY'S RANCH IS BREEDING FOR IMPROVED CHARACTERISTICS...COLOR IS NOT ONE OF THEM...THE COLOR YOU GET IS THE COLOR YOU GET.

What a delightful afternoon at Peggy's Alpaca Ranch.

DAY 21 – ASTORIA, OREGON

SPIA spent a comfy night in the parking lot of LUM’s TOYOTA, surrounded by shiny new cars.

Well before daylight…at 4am actually, I was up and spent the next 2.5 hours – with SPIA’s motor running to generate electricity, completing our blog…Verizon kept dropping out their signal all night long.

At 7am, started our walk to Astoria, some 6 miles back up US 101. Traffic is quite heavy on US 101, but the roadway is well engineered with plenty of “bicycle” Berm. On the way back to SPIA, stopped for breakfast at a small place at the end of the Causeway…very good with plenty of conversation.

Arriving back at SPIA, thanked the LUM folks and chatted with the mechanic who worked on SPIA. She had her electrical harness (plugs, wires, distributor cap & rotor) and a couple other things tweaked. She now purrrrs like a wee kitten.

Then, we drove out to FORT CLATSOP – the Lewis and Clark 1805 Winter Home…see pics. Again got that spine tingle walking around in History’s footsteps…Sacajawea actually lived in this room…Captain Clark actually drew his famous maps on this table…

Was particularly surprised to learn ho3w really large the Louisiana Purchase was…it extended from (present day New Orleans) the Mississippi Delta all the way up the Mississippi and Missouri River Watershed, which reached from the Great Lakes to the East into the Rocky Mountains in the West…and well into what is now Canada.

The Lewis and Clark exploration started out as a big secret because it was actually Spanish and French territory they would be exploring…until France assumed ownership of the entire geographic area and the United States in 1803 purchased the whole enchilada from France (Napoleon Bonaparte)…so the need for secrecy was now gone…Lewis and Clark were exploring United States Territory…at least until reaching the Far West into what in 1845 became the Oregon Territory…which extended from about the present California Northern Border clear into Central Alaska…including much of present day British Columbia

I thought I walked much of the Lewis and Clark Expedition Route last Summer on my walk to Oklahoma City…I WAS WRONG. I only walked that portion of the Columbia River from present day Longview, Washington, to Mount Hood, Oregon…Lewis and Clark took the Northern route – close to present day US 20, whereas I took the more Southern Route – on present day US 30…the Oregon Trail over the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains.

Leaving FORT CLATSOP, we drove to Peggy’s Ranch “TUCKER CREEK ALPACAS”.
What a surprise…Peggy runs the ranch while Husband Dave is holding down the fort in their SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA home.

With a beautiful home built on the hillside on the North of the Ranch acres spread out in a "radial" pattern filling the Front Room Window, a large herd…or rather a number of “divided” groups of these gorgeous animals moved quickly to the “spot of interest” along individual pasture fence lines…curious to know AND BECOME A PART of any excitement.

Received the Grand Tour, walking with Peggy from the ultra modern barn to one pasture of all the “Guys”, into another pasture of the “unusual” Gals, into another pasture yet, with all he recent “Moms”, a few offspring…and one Eunuch…who found he liked girls only after he was “altered”…so he is allowed the pleasure of female companionship while his peers watch greedily from two pastures over.

Apologize I cannot recall most of the terms Peggy used to describe attributes and functions of her babies – each of which (over 80 critters all told) has a personal name and all seem to adore Peggy.

Most were a bit unsure about ME. A few came right up, nibbled my fingers and sniffed around…but everybody (and I use the term “everybody” intentionally) wanted to get close and check out this new visitor. They are used to many visitors, as everyone I spoke to on both the Washington and Oregon side of the Columbia River knew or knew of Peggy and his children…and knew exactly where they lived.

Met Fran.

Fran, Peggy's Mom, is 90 years old this year and simply cannot believe it. We had a few hours, Fran and I to chitchat about the “First Depression” (her term) and some events we shared living on farms during that difficult time…and how it differs from today…especially from the standpoint of opportunities and responsibilities of “youngsters”…i.e.; if we wanted to eat, we worked…and we both LOVED our youngster working days.

Susan, friend, client, and OR Physician Assistant – who recently bought her own Alpaca from Peggy – visited while I was there. As Susan lives in town in an apartment, her “child” is boarded by Peggy, giving Susan unlimited “visiting rights”.

Also met Russ, the Vet, who checked out one of the Alpacas…

So much more…could write a book about this one afternoon…Peggy says…Bruce…why don’t ;you write a book…I had / have no reply.

Shared a large family-size Pizza with everyone – and took home a doggie bag which included a few of Fran’s Zucchini Muffins.

Reluctant to leave…Peggy offered SPIA to park overnight – we followed Susan back to SEASIDE, OREGON, where SPIA is just below the window of her second-floor apartment.

DAILY REPORT: Walked 10 miles – count 5 miles

SEE YOUR IMPACT.ORG: Credit 5 miles @ $0.02 = $0.10 for the day

It is noW 1:00am in the morning. Verizon was erratic again last evening, so gave it up until waking at Midnight with the day’s conversations rolling around in my head…so, got up, made two Tuna Salad Sandwiches – long ago consumed – and finished this narrative.

In the morning, will walk back to LUM’s and return…then head South on US 101 into the next episode of SAM & ME AND SPIA.

Getting sleepy - hope it is not SPIA's motor exhaust -, so, will upload the pics in a few hours...now back to the feathers.

DAY 20...ENTERING OREGON

BEAUTIFUL AND IMPRESSIVE ASTORIA - MEGLER (SP?) BRIDGE OVER THE COLUMBIA RIVER - Pic taken from Oregon (South) side of the Columbia River
WOOD FOR SALE - IN CHINOOK, WASHINGTON...Great Competition in town with fire wood FOR SALE on display in front yards

WHAT YOU CAN BUY IN CHINOOK

CHRIS' CHURCH, CHINOOK, WASHINGTON

POST OFFICE ACROSS THE STREET FROM THE LUTHERN CHURCH

GILL NETTER: A special purpose Fishing Boat. A long net with floats (to keep the net near the water surface) is spooled on that Drum in the front. To set the net, the Boat BACKS UP, reeling out the net from the spool. The beginning of the net is anchored and has a light - OR, IT IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE A LIGHT -. The boat serves as the other end of the net and controlls the net position. Theoretically, SALMON swin into the net (on their migration to their spawning rivers), get stuck in the small net holes and cannot back out because their GILLS get caught; i.e.: "GILL NET".
In the late 1980's, when navigating TICINO, our 36 foot Blue Water Sailing Yacht (custom built in Sweden) over Bellingham Bay late at night (Christiane and I ALWAYS sailed at night), Cri had to lie directly on the Bow - the front_ of the boat, flashlight in hand, watching for those DA _ _ GILL NETS. They were so thick on Bellingham Bay in 1989, there was no open path to sail a boat...SLOW SPEED DEAD AHEAD..."Hard Starboard..OK...Hard Port...OK...STOP STOP STOP..." Cri was good at her job.
Over the water, a totally blacked out voice..."..You hit MY net...gonna cost you $10,000.00."
GILL NET LIGHTS HARDLY EVER WORKED.
At 5'2" and 90 pounds (soaking wet), Cri often sailed TICINO - by herself - for a weekend into the San Juan Islands...miss you, Cri

HWY 401 IS GETTING A NEW CULVERT UNDER THE ROADWAY LEADING INTO THE COLUMBIA RIVER...When they are finished, the new pavement will have one of those SMALL WHITE LINES painted on the macadam to show where and what direction the new pipe goes under the road...see prior Blog.

FORT COLUMBIA...BIG GUNS SIMILAR TO THOSE AT FORT CASEY, WHIDBEY ISLAND, AND MINILA BAY, PHILLIPINES, WERE IN PLACE AT FORT COLUMBIA, 2 MILES SOUTH OF CHINOOK...which just happened to be the the Ancient Summer Home of the CHINOOK INDIANS, with whom Lewis and Clark traded when they reached the end of their Westward Trek.

BOYS MUST HAVE GIRLS...or is it the other way 'round...ANYWAY, THIS SIGN CONFIRMS THAT UNCLE SAM IMPORTED GIRLS FOR HIS BOYS.

THIS GUN WAS TO DISCOURAGE THE UGLY GIRLS...NO NO NO...just kidding...it was to discourage uninvited ships from attacking up the Columbia River.

SOLDIERS LIVED HERE; FORT COLUMBIA, WASHINGTON
Probably lots of MIDDENS if you dig down..."MIDDEN" (SP?) QUERY WIKIPEDIA OR GOOGLE...Interesting history, MIDDENS.

THANKYOU YOU FOR YOUR VISIT TO FORT COLUMBIA - Or perhaps for your Tax $$ to keep it open and cared for...actually, it is one of the best preserved and maintained Parks I have visited...Wonder if those Buildings are FOR RENT???

LEWIS AND CLARK, GIVING WOMEN THE RIGHT TO VOTE...WAY BACK IN 1805.

SITE OF LEWIS AND CLARK FINAL BEACHING OF THE CANOES...CHURCH CAME IN 1903...98 YEARS AFTER LEWIS AND CLARK...was probably for the FORT COLUMBIA FOLKS.

BY THE WAY, DID YOU KNOW THAT "WATERLOO" HAPPENED JUNE 18, 1815...10 YEARS "AFTER" LEWIS AND CLARK ARRIVED IN CHINOOK, WASHINGTON...Just to give us a perspective of of their Peers...i.e.; NAPOLEON BONAPART. Yes, I have spent a good deal of time in FRANCE...love the place.

INSIDE THE HWY 401 TUNNEL UNDER FORT COLUMBIA...a very LOUD and scary place to walk...notice, narrow (24") sidewalk and NO Guardrail between you and the traffic...and it is DARK - many lights do not work...and water seeps through cracks in the concrete, making the sidewalk slippery - in addition to not seeing where you are stepping...Disney World should have such a spot in their Haunted House.
That ditch is FULL of running water...quite easy for a vehicle to drop a tire into it...or for a walker to slip off the sidewalk and greet oncoming traffic up close and personal.

THE TUNNEL

GETTING LOTS OF "PRESS"

FROM 15 MILES AWAY, ONE CAN SEE THE NORTH JETTY LIGHT HOUSE ON THAT HILL SIDE

A CHINOOK, WASHINGTON HOME...NOTICE THE "VERANDA" CIRCLING ALL WAY AROUND...BUILDER PROBABLY IMMEGRATED FROM SO' CAROLINA.

AT FIRST GLANCE, I'D SAY THE RESIDENT IN THIS CHINOOK, WASHINGTON HOME IS SCANDAHOOVIAN.

CHINOOK, WASHINGTON HARBOR

CRAB POTS...PRIMED AND READY TO GO CRABB'N

SALT WATER EATS TRUCKS JUST LIKE MOSS EATS CARS...see prior Blog

LOOKING CAREFULLJY, ONE CAN SEE MT. HOOD...SOME 120 MILES UP RIVER - taken from the "flat part" of the ASTORIA, OREGON BRIDGE.

THIS IS A TRACTOR...NOTE THE "PTO" IN FRONT OF THE BIG WHEEL. "PTO" = Power Take Off...in this case a drum for mounting belts to power mowers, tillers, or to stir the Moonshine Pot, etc.

DAY 20…OREGON OR BUST

Crossed Over The Bridge today from Washington State to Oregon State.

Tried to walk, but was told it is prohibited. I can understand that as there is NO sidewalk and NO Berm…Death would surely result…but there goes my “walk every step” goal.

Tried ALL night to get yesterday’s post up-loaded. Verizon Signal kept dropping out. One good thing…I learned to SAVE at each picture up load and each narrative sentence.
Lost lots of narrative, which I cannot repeat…kinda like a first kiss…do it right the first time or forget it.

Up at 5:30 am. Initiated Verizon…NO SIGNAL.

Made porridge with raisin and brown sugar washed down with tea…tried Vsrizon again…

NO SIGNAL

Hibernated under 3 Duvets for another hour…tried Verizon again…Hoooray…2 bars.

Spent the two hours (until 8:30 am) recreating the lost post…looked it over…I like it…hope you’all do too.

Nicki greeted me with all kinds of doggie talk…she has quite a vocabulary…Jim came out…we said good bye.

Drove to CHINOOK, WASHINGTON, where I left off my walk last evening. Stopped in at the Chinook Restaurant for Biscuits and Gravy…HOME MADE…breakfast..created by Ron and served by Paula…who started up their new “life” last May…with instant success…

They allowed SPIA to park while I finished my walk to the Astoria Bridge and back.

Stopped on the way at “FORT COLUMBI”, a military fort created in 1886 to defend the entrance into the Columbia River…see pics.

Then walked through the “Tunnel”…very scary as it was dark and no railing between ME and traffic…the NOISE was like being in the middle of a continuous bomb blast – or at least as I image a continuous bomb blast to be.

Another mile, came across the actual Beach where Lewis and Clark landed their Canoes, officially completing their 1805 18-month journey to the Pacific Ocean.

Walked on another 2 miles to the bridge. Turned around and walked back to SPIA at the Chinook Restaurant//\\...

“CHINOOK” an interesting word:

Name of an ancient North American Indian Tribe with Summer home at the current Fort Columbia; A.K.A.:

name of the largest and (to ME) best tasting Salmon to swim; A.K.A.

name of the very WARM wind which comes after the snow…thawing and melting ice and snow in an hour or two; A.K.A.:

Heck, I don’t know…must check WIKIPEDIA…gotta be more “CHINOOK” definitions…

Oh,Yes…the name of the Indian Tribe Lewis and Clark met at the end of their journey. The Chinook Indian Summer Village overlooks the Beach Lewis and Clark completed their Westward journey.

I stood in the Chinook Summer Village Grounds and sat on the Lewis & Clark Beach…tingles ran up my back…

Drove SPIA over the Astoria Bridge…they would not let me walk it, so drove on to the Ranch of Peggy Stevens…only to find I could not find it. Left 2 phone messages…she called back and will drive out again tomorrow about noon.

Drove on to SEASIDE, OREGON and back towards Astoria to the Toyota Dealership to get SPIA a tune-up…new plugs, wires, distributor (complete), and differential plug which had been stripped…Total damages: $401.00 (OUCH).

But SPIA is now in absolute top shape in all respects.

Toyota folks allowed SPIA and ME to park in their business lot – surrounded by spanking new cars - . Tomorrow morning, will walk to Astoria and back…go visit Peggy..and walk to SEASIDE, OREGON…

DAILY UPDATE: Walked 10 miles this morning – count 5 miles

SEE YOUR IMPACT.ORG: Credit 5 miles #@ $0.02 = $0.10 for the day.

Now for a good night sleep…

Have no 120 volt electricity, so pics must wail for tomorrow upload..

Nite nite.

Slept in until 7am this morning...it was so cold, did not want to leave the feathers.

Finally did...went to the next door Restaurant for eggs, hashbrowns, rye toast and coffee.

Checked SPIA out of the RV Spot and drove to the laundromat. $1.75 / load to wash and $1.25 to dry.

Drove around Long Beach...took a few pics...and parked SPIA. Walked the three miles South on Hwy 100 to ILWACO, WASHINGTON...a well known fishing resort town on the Columbia River where it meets the Pacific Ocean. Walked back to SPIA - only 3 miles away - and drove to Ilwaco. Parked again and walked to the Lighthouse and the Lewis and Clark Information Center...awesome view from there of the Pacific Ocean and the massive waves crashing into the out-flowing Columbia River Waters...known as the graveyard of ships because of all the ships lost trying to cross the "Bar" over the last 150 years or so.

Came here a few times as a pre-teenager to Salmon Fish with Dad. Don't remember it well.

Stopped for a bowl of Clam Chowder and a Salad for lunch, parked SPIA again, and started walking the 13 miles on Hwy 100 East to the ASTORIA, OREGON Bridge crossing over the Columbia River.

Made it only 2 miles and was hailed by a fellow with two LARGE dogs...turns out the dogs were chummy and greeted me like an old friend...as did Jim, the "hailer".

Spent a half hour or so with Jim, his wife, Vera, and their Daughter, Erika...

Come on in...

I did

Have a drink

I did

Chat

We did

Jim is a retired Nurse. Erika is a still employed Nurse. Vera is a Physical Therapist, who makes a formidable Chicken Soup...loaded with just about every vegetable one can name...all from their own garden...which is still flourishing in mid-Winter...out in the open...thanks in great part to BIOCHAR.

Excused my self to continue my walk to the Bridge...Jim insisted SPIA spend the night, complete with electrical hookup ...

Bloody Verizon Signal keeps cutting out...lost over half of my narrative...

To try to continue:

Walked toward the Astoria, Oregon Columbia River Bridge for 7 miles and return..total 14 miles.....count 7 miles. In the morning, must do another 4 miles to complete this section before crossing over to Astoria.

Drove SPIA to Jim's, hooked up electrical, and spent the next 4 incredible hours in the home of Jim and Vera.

Jim is into bio-earth science...specializing on BIOCHAR...a science used World wide for ...well I guess, forever, but rather new to the USA. Basically, it involves creating BIOCHAR from virtually ANY organic substance...achieved by heating the "organic" material from 800 to 1,300 F. while excluding Oxygen. The uses of BIOCHAR are seemingly endless. Further processing techniques - being performed World-Wide right now, include extraction od oils.

Knowing NOTHING about BIOCHAR 4 hours ago, I don't feel qualified to go into ANY details...anyone interested may feel free to contact me ...or better yet, Google BIOCHAR...seems to be a signficant interest in the Amazon Basin (Brazil) on this subject.

Fascinating...simply fascinating.

Wrote much more, before Verizon DUMP, but too cold to repeat it now...perhaps later...apologize, Jim.

DAILY UPDATE: Walked 22 miles...count 11 miles

SEE YOUR IMPACT.ORG: Credit 11 miles @ $0.02 = $0.22 for the day.
Tomorrow, will complete the 4 miles to the Bridge, drive SPIA over the Bridge, and walk BACK over and return to SPIA.

Will then drive to Peggy's Alpaca Ranch Ranch...have her address and a good GPS.

Then, the next day, start our walk down the magnificent Oregon Pacific Ocean Coast.
