DAY 51 - ARCATA - EUREKA, CALIFORNIA

PLEASE MEET JENNIFER...WE WILL SEE MORE OF JENNIFER LATER

A VERY WET NIGHT WAS GREETED BY A MISTY MORNING. A SHORT WALK THROUGH ARCATA, CALIFORNIA PRODUCED THIS VERY NICE ART ON THE PACIFIC OUTFITTERS BUSINESS BUILDING.
WALKED BEFORE SUNRISE BACK UP "ALLIANCE ROAD" TO US 101 INTERCHANGE
ABOUT 3 MILES NORTH OF ARCATA - HAD WALKED 2 MILES OF THAT SAME ROAD LAST EVENING, BUT WANTED TO SEE IT AGAIN.
WALKED BACK TO ARCATA, BYPASSING SPIA, STROLLING THROUGH THE TOWN SQUARE AND SOUTH ON "OLD ARCATA ROAD" TO A "BYPASS" CALLED "INDIANOLA" ON US 101. IT WAS LEGAL TO WALK US 101 AT THAT POINT.

THESE FELLOWS ARE FOLLOWING ME EVERYWHERE...SOMETIMES ONE AT A TIME...SOMETIMES A WHOLE FLOCK CHATTERING AWAY AT EACH OTHER.

ARCATA HAS MANY OLD HOMES. THE CITY WAS ACTIVE IN THE 1850'S AND STILL HAS MANY OF IT'S ORIGINAL BUILDINGS.

WALKING SOUTH ON OLD ARCATA ROAD, CAME ACROSS THIS OLD BARN...SPIA WAS PARKED NEXT TO IT DURING ONE OF OUR THREE STOPS BETWEEN ARCATA AND INDIANOLA BYPASS TO US 101...A TOTAL OF ABOUT 8 MILES - WALKED DOUBLE.

A "RETIRED" CAB-OVER DIESEL TRUCK...THERE WERE MORE SUCH TRUCKS IN THE YARD OF THIS TRUCKING COMPANY ON OLD ARCATA ROAD. ALSO SOME NEWER ONES AS THE COMPANY IS STILL ACTIVE WITH ABOUT 15 RIGS LOOKING REARING TO GO.

US 101 A MILE NORTH OF EUREKA, CALIFORNIA. THIS PORTION OF US 101, ALTHOUGH STILL 4 - LANE, IS LEGAL TO WALK. SO, I PARKED SPIA IN A "TARGET" SHOPPING CENTER AND WALKED BACK TO THE INDIANOLA BY-PASS - AND RETURN TO SPIA.
AGAIN, DID NOT STOP AT SPIA, BUT KEPT WALKING SOUTH ON US 101 ALL THE WAY TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF EUREKA AND BACK TO SPIA...WITH MANY SIDE TRIPS TO SEE INTERESTING BUILDINGS AND GET A PHOTO.

ARCATA BAY TAKEN LOOKING WEST FROM US 101 (THE "WALKING" PORTION).

A VIEW OF US 101 WALKING PORTION, WITH CATHOLIC RADIO AM 1400 ADVERTISED. THERE ARE A NUMBER OF CATHOLIC CHURCHES AND SCHOOLS IN AND AROUND EUREKA, CALIFORNIA

A VIEW OF US 101 AS IT PASSES THROUGH EUREKA, CALIFORNIA

WOMEN IN BLACK - SOLIDARITY FOR PEACE...BEGAN 12 YEARS AGO UPON THE USA INVASION OF AFGHANISTAN. THESE FOLKS DRESSED IN BLACK ARE REPRESENTED IN MANY NATIONS AROUND THE WORLD...SILENTLY PROTESTING WARS FOR ONE HOUR A WEEK.
CHATTED WITH THEM FOR 15 MINUTES OR SO...VERY INTERESTING...HAPPENS I AGREE WITH THEM...WAR IS BECOMING A LESS VIABLE MEANS TO FURTHER FOREIGN DIPLOMACY.

A BUILDING IN DOWNTOWN EUREKA.

PLEASE MEET KELLY. KELLY WAS WORKING IN AN EXQUISITE SHOP OF ART FROM BALI, INDONESIA - HAPPENS I SPENT A COUPLE DAYS IN BALI, AND WALKED IN TO SEE IF I COULD FIND ANY ART FROM A CERTAIN 12-YEAR OLD I WATCHED FREEHANDING OILS ON SILK ON A PLANKED FLOOR OF AN OPEN BUILDING IN THE MOUNTAINS OF BALI. I BOUGHT TWO OF HIS WORKS, WHICH NOW HANG IN THE ENTRANCE OF OUR HOME IN BELLINGHAM.
KELLY AND I CHATTED FOR A HALF HOUR OR SO AND - OBVIOUSLY - BECAME FRIENDS. ANTICIPATE HEARING FROM KELLY FURTHER.

INDAH BALI...THE STORE IN WHICH I FOUND KELLY - AND JENNIFER LATER IN THE DAY. OH, YES, I DID RETURN TO INDAH BALI TO CONTINUE OUR NEWFOUND FRIENDSHIP...
ONLY TO FIND THAT KELLY HAD LEFT FOR THE DAY, REPLACED BY JENNIFER.
NOT TO PASS UP A NEW OPPORTUNITY WITH SUCH A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN, SPENT ANOTHER HOUR OR SO CHATTING - AND PHOTOGRAPHING - JENNIFER.
JENNIFER AND I HAVE ALREADY BECOME FACEBOOK FRIENDS AND WILL REMAIN IN CONTACT.

AN ART FROM BALI, INDONESIA. STRANGE AS IT SEEMS, I HAVE TAKEN A PHOTOGRAPH OF THIS SCENE WHEN I VISITED BALI A FEW YEARS AGO.
I HAVE WITH ME ON OUR WALK (ABOARD SPIA), OVER 3,500 PHOTOGRAPHS I TOOK OF MY AROUND-THE-WORLD CRUISE...IF THERE IS INTEREST, I WOULD BE PLEASED TO INCLUDE SOME OF THOSE PHOTOGRAPHS - INCLUDING THE ONE OF THE ABOVE LANDSCAPE -, COVERING EVERY CONTINENT IN THE WORLD, INCLUDING ANTARCTICA AND MANY EXOTIC ISLANDS. TO DO SO WILL ENTAIL MANY HOURS ... NO, MANY DAYS PREPARATION; BUT, IF THERE IS INTEREST, I WOULD BE PLEASED TO DO SO.

JENNIFER:
LEFT HIGH SCHOOL AND HOME AT 13 YEARS OLD. TODAY, AT 30, JENNIFER SAYS SHE HAS ACHIEVED HER OWN NICE HOME, HER OWN CAR, HER OWN LIFE.
SINGLE, JENNIFER, BORN AND RAISED NEAR WOODLAND PARK, SEATTLE, WASHINGTON, ATTENDED FRANKLIN HIGH SCHOOL, HAS PERFORMED ON STAGE AND "DONE SOME MODELING", AS WELL AS OWNING TWO OR THREE OF HER OWN BUSINESS...ALL SUCCESSFUL.
AFTER CHATTING FOR NEARLY AN HOUR, ASKED JENNIFER IF I MAY TAKE AND UPLOAD PHOTOGRAPHS OF HER...NO PROBLEM...WHERE WOULD YOU LIKE ME TO POSE ? ...
WELL, LETS FIND A SPOT WHICH DOES NOT TAKE AWAY FROM YOUR OBVIOIUS BEAUTY...AND WE WENT RIGHT TO IT

OBVIOUSLY, JENNER HAS BEEN THERE...DONE THAT.

YES, I DO HAVE MORE PHOTOGRAPHS OF JENNIFER...BUT FOR NOW, PLEASE SAY GOODBYE.

DAILY UPDATE: WALKED DOUBLE ALL DAY: SAY 34 MILES...COUNT 17 MILES
SEE YOUR IMPACT.ORG: CREDIT 17 MILES @ $0.02 PER MILE = $0.34 FOR THE DAY

HAVE PARKED SPIA IN THE SEARS MALL ON US 101 ON THE SOURTHERN EDGE OF EUREKA...HOPE WE WILLL NOT GET THROWN OUT DURING THE NIGHT.
IN THE MORNING, WILL WALK SOUTH ON THE WALKING PORTION OF US 101 AND RETURN TO SPIA. "PEDESTRIANS PROHIBITED" BEGINS AGAIN SOMEWHERE ABOUT 8 MILES SOUTH OF EUREKA.
WILL TAKE SOME TIME TO STUDY POSSIBLE ALTERNATE ROUTES...
IN THE MORNING, WE SHALL SEE.

  1. Boy, I miss that place. I ran a coffee house in old town Eureka. 1972 I think it was. As I recall Lloyd Bridges owned much of the old town then. Ah the memories..
