DAY 31 – CAPE FOULWEATHER – DEPOE BAY – NEWPORT, OREGON
Good fortune smiled…no raIn leaks in SPIA’s Air Conditioner…and it blew HARD and rained HARDER.
Up at 5:30 am…the usual oatmeal & Hot Chocolate. Was still raining at 7 am when I started North on US 101 off Cape Foulweather Mountain. Walked back to Depoe Bay and BACK up the mountain…kept going and walked DOWN the South side and BACK up to SPIA…Rain let up enroute…a good workout of about 15 miles – no rides.
Moved SPIA to Otter Rock, which also includes the Devils Punchbowl…a sight to behold.
One thing worrisome of this part of the Oregon Coastline…in many places, US 101 has slipped…many roadside parking areas are NO MORE…they simply are washed away by Ocean Storms…Concrete and Blacktop have plummeted down the 100 feet cliff, leaving much of the roadway hanging on by “inches” in some places.
The Devils Punchbowl is a good example…what used to be parking and walkway along the cliff is now a big hole…with large Ocean Waves carving out more and more of the cliffs…kinda exciting just to walk the path around The Devils Punchbowl…at any moment another section could give way…but probably happens during severe Storms…today was blowing and waves were pounding, but not so as to dissolve another section of the cliff from under foot…but then, who knows !
Moved SPIA half way to NEWPORT, OREGON…about 8 miles away from Otter Rock/Devils Punchbowl…and parked. Then walked back to Otter Rock (and return to SPIA)…kept walking South on US 101 clear into Newport…and BACK to SPIA.
Drove South into Newport to the YAQUINA LIGHTHOUSE road. Parked at the bottom of the hill, with intent to walk up the 1.5 miles…in doing so, nearly ran over a young lady pulling a wagon with a baby in it…in the rain.
Walked up the hill. Vehicles had to pay $7.00 to gain entrance…no charge for Walkers.
Lots of visitors were at the Lighthouse. Took some pictures…climbed the stairway up the inside of the Lighthouse, and started walking back to SPIA…now raining VERY hard…and who do I meet, but the lady with the baby wagon…no Hat…no Raincoat…baby giggling and waving a stick at the rain.
Introduced myself…I was the Motor Home nearly ran you over at the bottom of the Hill…you pulled the wagon all this way in the rain…Didn’t expect so much rain, but yes.
Mind if I take a photograph of you and your wagon…not at all…I’m walking across the USA…gave her my SAM & ME card…my name is Kerry and this is my Daughter Eden.
Gave Kerry my knitted hat…Kerry was soaked and probably quite cold…she had taken off her light windbreaker and wrapped Eden in it…who ignored the rain.
So, Kerry, Eden and I walked the 1.5 miles back up the mountain (the lighthouse is in a depression out on the Cape). The hill was quite steep and I ended up pulling the Little Red Wagon with Eden aboard all the way back to US 101.
Kerry is a single Mom…Daddy ran out on her & Eden a year ago…Kerry attends College 4 days a week and works the other days…See that big white house up on the hill, Kerry says as we walk down the mountain…Yes…I live just behind that big house…in a small house…that big one blocks my view…
The three of us walk South on US 101 in a really drenching rain, Kerry now pulling a Fast Asleep Eden, to a small Coffee Shop. I buy her a coffee and ME a bowl of beans and rice (was good) and coffee. We chatted for over an hour…her about my thoughts of a young Mother traveling to the East Coast with a Baby…
OOPs…yes, I can drive a Motor Home…helped sail a 70 foot Yacht for 6 months in the Atlantic and am a not such a bad cook.
After a L-O-N-G hour, I needed to get on my way…but was reluctant to leave Kerry…she asked me what I recommended she cook for dinner...it was raining like crazy…when in walks a Grizzled Lumberman Type… was looking behind him for "Babe"...
Oh, Eden…here comes your Daddy…
Now how did that coincidence come about? Daddy takes Eden...who instantly stops crying. Kerry hugs ME ...for the hat and our long chat, she whispers…I Hug her back...perhaps a bit too lingering...wish her well ... Daddy, Kerry & Eden climb into Daddy’s Pickup Truck...
I walk back to SPIA.
That’s all I have to say about THAT ! (Borrowed from a famous Runner, F.G.)
We drive through Newport, across the beautiful Bridge and out about a mile to an Oregon State Camp Ground, where SPIA is settled in for the night.
DAILY REPORT: Walked about 30 miles (round trip from Depoe Bay to Newport) count 15 miles.
SEE YOUR IMPACT.ORG: Credit 15 miles @ $0.02 per mile = $0.30 for the day.
When I left Bellingham, I was admonished to stay away from all Women … because you do not know how to handle them…
Often think…no, often PONDER… on that admonition…
Tomorrow morning, will walk back to Newport – over that beautiful Bridge – and then South on US 101…just to find what is waiting around that next curve in the road
It's raining very hard...is quite cold again...a good long snuggle would be nice
